I’m certain I’m not alone in having a love\/hate relationship with MS Excel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Excel is undeniably invaluable for its intended purposes\u2014calculations and statistics. However, I can’t be the only one who’s been pushed into using Excel for almost everything else, like Project Management, Product Management, and Customer Relations Management, among many other tasks. Countless times in meetings, someone has suggested creating a “tracker” or managing a complex task in Excel, which often results in frustration. Most agree it’s a terrible idea, leading to a non-maintainable mess after months of battling with Excel. Eventually, we give up and switch to tools designed specifically for those tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, I also appreciate Excel for its versatility as a universal tool across various challenges. In recent team situations requiring a tool, I’ve found myself suggesting, “Let’s start with Excel.” The reason being, when you’re starting something new and aren’t certain about its evolution or your tool needs, Excel is an excellent starting point. It allows you to start experimenting immediately and gain clarity on your requirements as the process unfolds. Excel, in this context, becomes an invaluable tool for your internal Product Discovery process, helping you find the right tool for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The real challenge lies in knowing when to transition to a dedicated tool. The first step is acknowledging upfront that Excel is for prototyping purposes only, not as a long-term solution. This approach makes it more bearable, as you understand why you’re using a spreadsheet for a non-spreadsheet purpose and what insights you aim to derive from it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
